Interpretation and Definitions
The words of which the initial letter is capitalized have meanings defined under the following conditions. The following definitions shall have the same meaning regardless of whether they appear in singular or in plural.

- Purpose: Hand washing and hand sanitizing for hand hygiene is the act of cleaning one’s hands with water and soap for the purpose of removing soil and dirt and thereafter using a sanitizing liquid to remove microorganisms to prevent contamination.
- Scope: This outlines the procedure for proper hand washing and sanitizing.
- Upon entering the facility it is a requirement to wash and sanitize hands.
- Hands are to be washed and sanitized after:
Visiting an ablution facility
Completion of a task
Performing a cleaning procedure
Coughing or sneezing
Whenever hands have become soiled or contaminated
Before and after administering first aid
And before the handling/inspection of food
- One should first rinse hands with warm water, keeping hands below wrists and forearms, to prevent contaminated water from moving from the hands down to the wrists and arms.
- Use enough of liquid soap, to completely cover the hands.
- Rub wet, soapy hands together, outside the running water, for at least 20 seconds as shown in the Hand Washing Techniques below.
- Be sure the cover the thumb, the wrist, the areas between the fingers, and under fingernails. Artificial nails, chipped nail polish and long nail harbour microorganisms.
- Rinse off hands with warm running water.
- Dry thoroughly with a single sheet of paper towel and discard the used paper towel into the bins provided.
- A sanitizer should be used after washing hands with soap and water or when hands are not visibly dirty for a quick clean up.
- Apply alcohol based sanitizer to palm of hand (1 – 2 pumps).
- Rubs hands together, covering the entire surface of hands, between fingers and under nails, until dry.
- Allow hands to air dry.
- Your hands are now safe to proceed with your work.
To prevent the calculation of inaccurate Verified Gross Mass (VGM) because of faulty weighing equipment.
A faulty scale will be reported by the weighing operator as per his operating procedure.
Corrective action in case of faulty weighing equipment:
- Stop use of the scale immediately.
- Demarcate the scale from the area or remove power supply to ensure that it is no longer used.
- Isolate all items weighed during the time in which the error occurred.
- Report fault to your supervisor who will call out the preferred scale service provider to attend to the faulty scale.
- A record must be kept of all faulty equipment and repairs done on a “Service and Maintenance Report”
- Re-weigh all isolated items.
- What you need to know about Covid-19
- The spread of the disease occurs mainly via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how influenza and other respiratory pathogens spread.
- Apart from being directly infected by the droplets, healthy person can also be infected when the
- virus settles on surfaces from where it can transfer to their hands and infect them when they touch their eyes, nose or mouth.
- Symptoms of the disease are a sore throat, slight fever, fatigue, headache, tiredness and a dry cough.
- Any person of any age can be infected by the disease, but older people are more likely to develop severe illnesses.
- The disease is more likely to be severe and even fatal for the following:
- Persons over the age of 80 (although it should be noted that the severity increase with age,
starting with those over the age of 60);
- Persons with compromised immune systems (due to for instance HIV/AIDS and cancer); and
- Persons with comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease (10.5% mortality), diabetes (7.3%
- mortality), chronic respiratory disease (6.3% mortality) and hypertension (6% mortality).
- Healthy, fit individuals are more likely to develop only mild symptoms and to recover quickly.
- The virus is denatured by strong sunlight, soap and water, and most disinfectants.
- On surfaces, the virus can survive for up to 24 hours if left untouched and unsanitised, although
- there is some indication that the virus may remain active for up to 5 days on hard, shiny surfaces, fabrics and paper.
The transmission of the disease can be prevented by:
- Washing hands regularly with soap or using an appropriate hand sanitiser
- (Please note that ordinary soap works well enough as long as hands are washed for long
enough (more than 20 seconds), and that anti-bacterial hand wash soap is no more effective
against viral contamination. Washing hands properly and for long enough with soap and water is also more effective than using hand sanitiser.)
- Avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
- Coughing or sneezing into a flexed elbow or covering it with a tissue which is then
- immediately discarded.
- Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Every driver must complete a Forklift Daily Inspection checklist before utilizing the machine.
- Any faults found during the checks must be recorded on the checklist and reported to management before utilizing the machine.
- Management will confirm if the machine can still be used.
OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS
- Watch out for pedestrians.
- Ensure the lifting tines are secure into the pallet and the load is stable before lifting or driving off.
- Be careful of ceiling clearance or overhead obstructions when raising the mast.
- Always remember that the safe working load of a forklift reduces as the mast is tilted forward.
- Always put the heavy end of the load against the load backrest.
- When approaching a blind corner or approaching a door/entrance way, use horn and drive slowly.
- Always have someone guide you if a load restricts your vision.
- Slow down when changing direction or on wet or greasy surfaces.
- Avoid harsh braking, especially when carrying a load.
ENDING OPERATIONS AND CLEANING UP
- When stopping the forklift:
- Park on even ground and lower the forks to the ground.
- Shift the gear selector to park position and apply the parking brake.
- Turn off the ignition and remove the keys.
- Do not use faulty equipment. Report any faults immediately.
- Do not allow any passengers to ride on the forks.
- Do not lift a load with the mast tilted forward.
- Do not travel with forks raised or reach mechanism extended.
- Never travel with the load elevated.
- Do not attempt to turn on an incline or sloping surface.
- Do not dismount from a forklift while the engine is running unless the vehicle has completely stopped, transmission is in park position, and the parking brake is effectively engaged.
- Do not leave forks elevated when forklift is unattended.
- Do not refuel an engine-powered forklift unless the motor is stopped, and ignition turned off.
- Do not lift a safety cage without it being chained and if the occupants are not using safety harness.
8 Point Container Inspection Procedure
- Purpose: To verify the physical integrity of the container structure prior to loading
- The below Eight-point interior and exterior inspection process must be done for all containers entering the premises:
Vents (Weighbridge Staff)
- Front wall (Weighbridge staff) – Whilst on the weighbridge inspect front wall, making sure vents and blocks are visible and appropriately spaced. Look for different wall colours and blocks that are too close to the vents. Use a tool to tap front wall – you should hear a hollow, metal sound. Check, note and take pictures of all minor to moderate defects.
- Vent Settings (Weighbridge staff) – Whilst on the weighbridge inspect the vent settings on the front wall of the container. The vents must be opened at 15cbm. If the vents are closed, immediately notify the planner who will notify the client.

- Left side (Weighbridge staff) – Whilst on the weighbridge inspect internal and external surfaces, including structural beams. Use a tool to tap side walls – listen and feel for hollow metal sound. Look for any repairs. Blocks and vents inside container must be visible and appropriately spaced. Check, note and take pictures of all minor to moderate defects.
- Right side (Weighbridge staff) – Whilst on the weighbridge inspect internal and external surfaces, including structural beams. Use a tool to tap side walls – listen and feel for hollow metal sound. Look for any repairs. Blocks and vents inside container must be visible and appropriately spaced. Check, note and take pictures of all minor to moderate defects.
- Outside doors (Weighbridge staff) – Whilst on the weighbridge ensure locking mechanisms are secure and in good working order. Doors should seal completely when closed. Check, note and take pictures of all minor to moderate defects.
- Undercarriage (Weighbridge staff) – Whilst on the weighbridge inspect undercarriage. Undercarriage support beams should be visible; solid plates should not cover the beams if possible. Check, note and take pictures of all minor to moderate defects.
- The below eight-point interior and exterior inspection process is recommended for all containers in the Bays:
- Ceiling/Roof – Inspect external roof and internal ceiling, use tool to tap – you should hear a metal, hollow sound if possible. Look for any repairs. Check, note and take pictures of all minor to moderate defects
- Interior Floor – Inspect floor for unusual repairs. Floor should be flat and one height. There should be no steps or raised platforms inside container. Check, note and take pictures of all minor to moderate defects.
- Look for structural defects that will threaten the safety and security of people loading and unloading containers.
- Also check for the below:
- Significantly bent / bowed posts, support beams or broken welds
- Door in poor condition that prevents proper sealing
- Holes into container
- Ensure that the container is dry.
- Check that the container is free from any foreign/non-food grade objects.
- Condensation / standing water or wet floors
- Unpleasant odour
- Defaced container markings
- Reject containers that do not pass the 8-Point Inspection criteria.
- Any faults found on a container must immediately be reported to a Supervisor on duty. The supervisor must record any deviations on a Deviation Report.
